Decluttering vs. Cleaning

Decluttering can either be a short warm up for cleaning or take a whole day to move everything out of the way before getting out the duster and hoover. The latter meaning that you possibly never get around to the cleaning.

I’ve always known that decluttering and cleaning were completely separate activities, and I still spend a lot of my time on the clutter rather than the cleaning. Having said that, the daily clutter routines that I now have in place (see previous blogs) are helping me tremendously.

What is also going to help me move forward even more today are the concepts below. I noted these down on my phone this morning as I was walking back from the gym listening to the last chapter of Dana K White’s book Decluttering the Speed of Life:

CLEANING: this needs to be done over and over

DECLUTTERING: once it’s gone it’s gone and you never have to deal with that particular item again.

That’s motivation enough for me to get back into the spare room today and purge some more stuff.

Until next time…

Clutter barrier items

We all have items in our homes that are barriers to decluttering. When I come across these types of items, they can literally stop me in my tracks and I either stop decluttering or move them to another area of the room or house.

Today, I got past a few of these items. I think that it helped that I was listening to a decluttering book at the time, because it completely altered my frame of mind. I picked the items up and put them in a charity bag. It was hard, but I did it. Thoughts were going through my mind at the time about how much I paid for the items or that someone I know might want them. I tried to change my mindset by thinking about how much I value the charity shop that I donate to, so I imagined someone buying the items and looking after them for me, instead of them being in my spare room for the next 10 years.

I talked to my partner about this to see if he could help me make sense of what was going through my mind and he said ‘other people needing these items isn’t our issue’ and suggested taking photos of them as memories. He made me realise that just giving them away would free the space and allow me to actually use it to relax. He thinks so differently to me.

A clutter barrier item

As part of my decluttering project, I’ve decided to make a list (and take photos of) the items that I come across that literally stop me delcuttering. Then, at some point in the future when I’ve put the new space to good use (which is still a very scary thought and feels a long way away) I will look back at what had been stopping me all these years.

What’s stopping you decluttering?

Until next time…

Clutter tips that stick

In Dana K White’s other book called How to Manage your Home without Losing your Mind’, she suggests ‘doing the dishes’ every day in order to keep on top of things in the kitchen. This doesn’t just mean washing up. The idea is that you clear and clean the kitchen counters, removing, washing and putting everything away. Every day.

No matter how tired I am in the evening, the surfaces get cleared, everything goes in the dishwasher and it gets switched on (even if it’s not full). I then sweep the floor which means that I’m moving clutter from corners as well.

This, combined with the start at the front door decluttering tip that Dana K White suggests in her other book Decluttering at the Speed of Life’, is helping me keep on top of the clutter downstairs.

When I get up in the morning, this decluttered space feels really good. I’m not saying that it stays clear, as life happens, but at least I know what I have to do daily to put it right.

Until next time…

Enjoy life’s moments

I recently watched a film called ‘The Convenient Groom’ and the following few lines stuck in my mind:

“Everything in life is temporary. You’ve just got to enjoy life’s moments while you have them”.

It’s really made me think about everything I do and appreciate even the smallest moments. The children grow so fast and each of their stages of growing up are ‘moments in time’. Things that have frustrated me in the past, I’m now embracing instead, and learning from them.

Until next time…

Walk into each room like a guest

After writing yesterday’s blog, I decided to apply the ‘start at the front door’ concept to the spare room; a room that’s bugged me for 10 years! I have many pictures of that room with clutter in it, and although I don’t have previous pictures to hand right now, I imagine that it’s mainly the same clutter but in different places, with items being added every so often.

Sometimes, when I’m really feeling motivated, items move out of the room in rubbish bags or charity bags – whoopee! Sometimes I even find places for the items around the house or give them away. The problem I have is that I find it difficult to make decisions about what to do with the stuff.

Today, I started at the entrance to the room and worked my way in, armed with one rubbish bag and one charity bag and made quick decisions. I also immediately put things away that needed to travel to other rooms. One hour later, I hoovered the area of carpet that was visible and stopped to make dinner.

When I walked back in after dinner, it was like walking into a different room. The narrow corridor that I had created over the years with the boxes of clutter either side was wider and I could actualy walk in without turning sideways.

I still need to repeat the ‘start at the front door’ tip that I started doing yesterday, and make sure that I also keep on top of that area every day. If I then do 10-15 mins in the spare room on top of that daily task, I should make progress.

Do you have any daily routines that help you keep on top of clutter?

Until next time…

Start at the front door

I tried the above tip yesterday, after returning from holiday and realising that I never tided up before leaving for the airport 2 weeks before! The place was a mess and I was pleased that no one was coming round to visit.

If you’ve been following my blogs, you will see a scattering of posts about clutter over the years. I have read lots of books on the subject and have come up with a few ideas of my own too. Nothing seems to stick. Random things are always lying around. No one is as passionate as me about putting things away – that is, if there is actually a place to put these things away. Rooms that we don’t use are filled with things that we don’t use.

Yesterday, when I couldn’t think of where to start in the house, I pressed play on the audio book Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K White. I’d started listening to it on the last few days of my trip, as I was desperate to find something that would trigger me into changing for good.

I paused after listening to these two sentences: “Go to the front door, or whatever door your guests enter. See what the guests see and start there”.

I didn’t think that it could be that easy, but after replacing the batteries in the room spray by the front door and triggering off the wonderful scent, I started picking things up and moving them to where they needed to go. Within five to ten minutes, I was in the dining room. I looked back at the hallway and was surprised how different it looked and smelt.

I started working through the dining room and then the kitchen. Only thirty minutes to one hour had gone by and I was already feeling better.

I’m going to try and do this daily and get in to the habit of seeing things like a guest. I’m going to try and make at least this one tip stick. Then, if someone does happen to pop over or follow me into the house, I won’t be embarrassed by the mess!

Thanks Dana!

Until next time…

Spring clutter clearing

I started listening to The Art of Discarding by Nagasaki Tatsumi this afternoon. I have over 50 Audible Books in my library ready to listen to when I need inspiration. This one was perfect for today as I remembered that her tips helped me last Spring. She said in the first chapter “Keep things that you use and discard those you don’t. Things are given life by being used”

As mentioned yesterday, my challenge today was to clear the clothes etc by the end of today. I find it very difficult to part with things so I roped my partner into helping with his wardrobe and in less than an hour, we’d filled 5 charity bags and that was just his stuff. We then put everything back with room to spare.IMG_1895.JPG

I’d carried out some similar purging this time last year so I just tidied some of my wardrobe and put all the other clothes away. It took all afternoon but it felt good!

I just want to add that it was my youngest daughter that inspired us all this weekend as she sorted out her wardrobe and drawers and did a wonderful job. It looks lovely with all the matching coat hangers and everything lined up in colour order.

There’ll be a lot of bags going to the charity shop next weekend and our house feels lighter already.

Now that all the clothes are away, my next challenge will be to organise the inside of the wardrobes and drawers to make it easier to put things away. None of this shoving things into the already-crammed-full drawers. I made a start on this today by removing the contents of a ‘bits and bobs’ drawer that I can’t remember opening for months and making it my new sock drawer.

It’s definitely Spring.

Until next time…

Improving your home space

The clutter seems to have piled up around the house again; mainly upstairs. So, after sitting here feeling sorry for myself and not knowing where to start, I’ve decided to start with one area…clothes and other articles.

I’m setting myself a goal that by the end of today tomorrow, all clothes will be either in the washing basket, in the wash or put away.

It must be a Spring thing! I need to improve the space around me, but realise that I need to start with small tasks rather than look at the whole job at hand.

What clutter do you see around you every day that makes you feel frustrated?

Follow me on my decluttering journey.

Until next time…

There’s something about a vacuumed floor…

I looked back at the room that I’ve been tidying today. Well done, I thought to myself, but still a long way to go. The room needed a good vacuum which I knew would instantly change the way I felt about the space and motivate me to continue with the good work.

After 3 minutes vacuuming (just the parts that were visible) I sat down to take a look. It felt instantly cleaner and fresher even though the same clutter was there.

Motivated, I moved on…

Catch up with me later

I’m fed up with the clutter

imageThat’s it. I’m doing something about it (I’ve said that before) and I’m going to be really ruthless and throw things away (I’ve said that before too!).

What shall I do with all the clutter and stuff lying around? I’ve been a homeowner for almost 27 years now and it’s probably only the first few years of that time that I had a tidy and clutter free house. So, what’s happened over the years and why do I always seem to be clutter clearing and tidying? My daughter thinks that it’s because I like doing it.

My excuses are that I’ve lived in different houses, lived with different people, bought too much stuff, not had time to get rid of things etc. There’s stuff of mine, stuff of theirs, stuff I can’t bear to part with, stuff I don’t know how to get rid of, stuff that has no designated place, stuff that brings back memories and so on. However, I’ve been in this particular house for almost 9 years now, so why do I always appear to be clutter clearing and tidying the same rooms? And why does no one else in the family seem to worry about it as much as me?

I’m going to change from today. Follow me on my journey…

Until later…
