Is 91 too old to be coached?

Me and my dad

Today I just wanted to share a special moment of feedback with you. I always skype my mum and dad every Sunday at 5pm for a couple of hours, and yesterday was no different.

😀 We have a chat and a laugh

📒 We do a crossword together

After the crossword, my dad had a few things he wanted to talk about, one of them being that his feet have been hurting for a while, and it was stopping him going for walks with my mum. The tablets and cream from the doctors weren’t helping either.

After listening to him and asking him a few questions, he started to talk through what he puts inside his slippers and shoes, and (to mine and my mum’s surprise) pulled out not just one insole, but five insoles as well as a half cushioned one for his heel.

I asked him how they are helping and he wasn’t sure that they were. I asked him if he knew the different reasons for using insoles and we chatted about that for a while. He said that he’d got a similar amount of insoles in his trainers.

He sat for a while and thought about it and then without any prompting, he took all the insoles out of his slippers except for one pair and walked around the house in them saying that he was going to try that for a while.

I have no idea if this is going to stop his feet hurting (I’ll let you know one day) but what I do know was that he was a very happy client and said the following:

“Thank you Sandra, you’ve changed my life completely. At the beginning my feet will hurt, but I’ll let you know how I’m getting on. I shall remember this day for a long time”.

I didn’t do anything other than listen. My dad, who is turning 92 in a couple of weeks, is the sweetest person I know and grateful for everything. He’s always been very active and still goes to the gym with my mum 3 times a week; however, because of the pain in his feet recently, he’s been thinking that he’s getting too old to walk.

By helping him change his mindset about ‘being too old’, wearing so many insoles in his shoes and getting some more supportive ones that could alleviate the problem, I’m hoping that he’ll continue to be as active for many years to come.

(Permission given by my dad to post this 😊)

Until next time…

Sandra

About Sandra Madeira

I am a working mum and entrepreneur with a passion for writing, coaching, mentoring and inspiring others. Subjects I tend to blog about are life skills, parenting, decluttering, worklife balance, career etc. I’ve been on a decluttering mission for years creating space in my house, garden and mind. In 2020 I challenged myself to declutter every day for a whole year and write about it daily. After that success I took on a challenge to change my career from accountant to life coach, and in early 2024 set up my own company. I continue to keep up with the decluttering, and now write daily about my home life and coaching business. Have a good day! Sandra www.https://sandra@solarcoaching.co.uk
