Since starting The Organised Mum Method (TOMM) for tackling my cleaning three weeks ago, I’ve been religiously ticking off my tasks on the #teamtomm app and getting a smiley face at the end of the day. As mentioned in my last post the method includes daily tasks as well as cleaning set rooms Monday to Thursday. There is also a Friday focus where one room (on an eight week rotation) gets a deep clean. Last week the focus was bathrooms.
The bathroom checklist included some tasks that (embarrassingly) I hadn’t done for a while. I couldn’t start on them until Friday evening as I was working late; however, it was actually a light relief (after sitting down at my desk all day) to be scrubbing the window sill, window, floor to ceiling tiles, shower attachment and shower screen. I threw away so many empty and unused toiletry bottles away. It was very satisfying and took my mind off the challenging week I’d had at work. Later in the evening I had a bath and it felt wonderfully clean and the bathroom smelt fresh.
That was just the main bathroom, so I set myself a target to tackle the other bathrooms over the weekend by using the other feature of TeamTomm… the bootcamp section. This has no time limit.
What motivated me to continue?
I’ve been doing the tasks at my own pace over the weekend, and my motivation came from seeing the results of the main bathroom.
My daughter has an new en-suite that was renovated three months ago and it’s been getting a quick wipe around by one of us since then. She’s been poorly with an earache for the last few days so yesterday I decided to give her bathroom a once over making it look like new again.
Being newly fitted it was actually a joy to clean it. None of this annoying engrained dirt that lurks around bathrooms in corners that haven’t seen a cloth or had a scrub for a while. It was relatively easy to make things look shiny and new again.
Today I made a start on our en-suite.
I was only going to clean around the sink area and scrub and polish the towel rail, but then I got a bit carried away and ended up decluttering and sorting out the bathroom cabinet. I haven’t quite finished the whole en-suite but there’s no rush.
So, you could say that this cleaning lark is working out better than I thought it would. I’m actually starting to feel quite house-proud, and this is someone who focused on decluttering for a whole year last year where cleaning came second.
Once every room has been included in the Friday focus and I continue to keep up with the daily tasks, I should be able to reduce the amount of time that I clean and I will then be able to get the balance back between decluttering and cleaning, and of course have more of that all important me-time.
So far so good!
Hope you’ve all had a good Sunday.
Until next time…
