Day 237: Tackling Another Cluttered Cupboard, Led to Two Hours of Reading Old Journals

I have a week off and I didn’t start it with a headache which is certainly a first. I must be doing something right.

My new regime of spending an hour or so to myself in the conservatory every morning is working well. After eating my breakfast, I set a timer and spend 24 minutes just sitting and letting my thoughts wander with only a notepad in front of me. This is different to the meditation tracks that I also listen to in the evenings.

So far (since I started my morning time out sessions last Friday), no one has disturbed me and it’s doing wonders to my life in ways that I cannot even explain. I feel calmer, happier and more fun (don’t laugh, but I think I used to be fun 😂). It’s like the clutter clearing and time out per day is uncovering something… which leads me nicely onto what I worked on today.

The wardrobe in the bedroom

I couldn’t continue working in the spare room today because my husband was working in there, so I diverted my attention to our bedroom. I sat there with a cup of tea planning my next move and thought that I would possibly have time to take everything off the top shelf of one of the built in wardrobes and start sorting through it. Here’s a 48 second video of what it looked like when I opened it…

As you would have seen in the video, I had my work cut out. This is how I tackled it:

  • I covered my bed with a sheet
  • I took everything off the top shelf only and placed it on the bed
  • I put the scarves that were hanging on the door into the washing basket (to be decluttered once cleaned and dried)
  • I then started to go through things in categories but unfortunately stopped at my journals…

The diaries and journals

I always knew that this wardrobe held memories but I was ready for it today. I won’t go into detail but basically I spent about two hours reliving a couple of years of my life from reading some of my journals. It certainly helped me make sense of a few things in my head. I’m very glad that I write things down.

I put them all back as I want to spend more time on organising my journals another day. I want a fireproof and waterproof box. Need to do some research.

I looked at the clear shelf in the wardrobe and wondered what I should store up there.

Empty space in wardrobe

It’s only temporary as we want to knock out these wardrobes eventually and make one wall of wardrobes or a walk in wardrobe instead.

Shoe storage

I decided to store shoes, sandals and boots on the top shelf for now. I have too many but most of the ones that I have placed up there I actually want to keep. I even found some odd shoes and sandals and recalled seeing the missing halves in the garage. As it was getting late, I just organised them as best I could which freed up some space down the bottom half of the wardrobe.

Using the top shelf for organising footwear

As I needed my bed for the night, I put the rest of the unsorted stuff back into the wardrobe. I also left a pile of unwanted stuff in the corner of the room that needs to go elsewhere or be donated, I will finish the job another day this week.

Until tomorrow…

  1. It sounds as if the time you set aside for yourself is working and you are reaping the benefits. When after 39 years of asking I finally got my closet organization installed see my post How to organize the space in your closet from August 2019 and it changed my life! Not only did I gain room but I am so much more organized, I don’t have to struggle to put things away, find clothes and it is so much neater. I can see everything at a glance.
