The squirrel and the advent calendars

The other week, the library near work was closed so I went to my second favourite bench in the park to sit and think.  I began watching a friendly (or so I thought) squirrel running around and playing with an empty takeaway box.

Next to me on the bench was my carrier bag containing two ‘full’ Christmas advent calendars, which Mr Squirrel had his eye on.  If you look at the forth picture, it looked like he was about to pounce on me – unless he just wanted to open door number one!  I moved slightly and it fled, only to return a few minutes later behind me.  Just as I started to feel a little uncomfortable, he returned to where the cardboard box was (once again ignoring me) and began nibbling on some acorns.

A bit about squirrels…

Having some time on my hands that day, I googled ‘squirrels’ and learnt that the gray squirrel is notorious for carrying a deadly pox virus which does not affect them.  There are apparently many gray squirrels in this country now (thankfully not near my bench).  They came from the USA in the late 19th/early 20th century and feed at ground level.  Unlike the red squirrel, they can digest acorns.

I haven’t been back to the bench since!  Maybe I’ll brave it next year…

Until next time…

Having trouble sleeping? Some food and drink suggestions to reach for…

Article first published as Beat Insomnia: Food and Drink that can Promote Sleep on Technorati.

If you suffer from insomnia, it can be useful to include sleep-inducing foods in your evening meal or just before going to bed.  As a sufferer of insomnia in the past, I’m always drawn to articles like the one below, just in case it suggests something new to try.

A study at Northumbria University has revealed that drinking tart cherry juice (‘tart’ indicates less sugar)  can increase the levels of melatonin in your body which can improve sleep (Metro Newspaper, A Cherry Good Way to Sleep, 2 Nov 2011).  All you have to do is drink it twice a day.

I did think that it would be easier to just take melatonin supplement, but then I read the co-author Dr Jason Ellis’s comment: “although melatonin is available over the counter in other countries, it is not freely available in the UK”.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a chemical that controls the body’s internal clock to regulate sleep and not only do cherries have a very high level of this, but they are also one of the only natural food sources, as explained in an article by Melanie Haiken ‘5 Foods to Help you Sleep’ (source: Health Conscious Travel).   There are also many other foods that contain melatonin and some also produce sleep-inducing chemicals as explained below.

Carbohydrates with your Evening Meal or as a Midnight Snack

Food containing carbohydrates cause your blood sugar level to rise and your body then produces insulin to bring it back down causing a sudden tiredness.  Starchy carbohydrates like bread, brown rice, pasta or potatoes are a good choice to eat with your evening meal, as they also release relaxing brain chemicals – tryptophan (an amino acid) and serotonin (the happy hormone) along with the insulin, explains Helen Forster, author of Detox Solutions. This coincides with Melanie Haikin’s article where she suggests that toast is a perfect midnight snack as it contains carbohydrates (which gives you the tiredness you need a short while after eating it).

The same is true for a bowl of oatmeal.  Even though you may have heard that the slow release of carbohydrates in oats makes it a good breakfast choice (as it keeps you going all morning), oats are also a natural rich source of melatonin.
It was a surprise to me that bananas aid sleep too, and it will be something that I will now reach for somewhere between my evening meal and bedtime. Firstly their potassium and magnesium content are natural muscle relaxants and secondly they contain tryptophan which, after a few conversions in the brain, turns into serotonin.  Lastly, they contain melatonin.

So with all the stress of daily life, a glass of warm milk or a banana before bedtime might be a good idea, which may not have been an obvious choice as they are mainly breakfast items. Before you go rushing out to buy cherry juice or stock up on oatmeal and bananas, why not try a simple cup of camomile tea an hour before bedtime; this has worked for me for years (although I have started having a banana with it this week and have in fact slept very peacefully).

Have you got any food or drink suggestions which help you sleep?

Until next time…

Do you think that the whole work-life balance thing is a myth?

Article first published as Is Work-Life Balance for a Working Parent a Myth? on Technorati.

We’ve all heard of ‘work-life’ balance and we all want a better one, but do we actually know what it is and when we’ve got a good one? According to Ann McElvoy in My Working Woman’s Guide to Surviving Family Life, “the work-life balance is a myth cooked up by magazine writers and HR departments to save on contracts” (The London Evening Standard online, 26 October 2011).

Her rationale on this is that when you would prefer to be at home you are contracted to be at work, for example, when your child is contagious with chicken pox and no nursery, childminder or school will let them go within an inch of another child, that’s the time when it’s vital that you’re in the office. Conversely, when you would rather be at work i.e. there’s nothing going on at home, it will be a day that the employer won’t need you. Work-life balance doesn’t appear to be an exact science – life is much more challenging than that.

So, how do we get a better work-life balance? Are we doomed for failure? Surely it’s different for each one of us. Some of us think we’ve got there when we have been feeling happier and organised for a few days, and then a crisis appears out of the blue, just when you have booked that relaxing morning off for an Indian head massage or round of golf.

Ann McElvoy also writes that as a working parent “you have an office to escape to – a place where few colleagues throw tantrums and most of them don’t leave their underpants on the floor”. That is so true – I quite often make an announcement when I sit down at my desk that ‘I’ve come to work for a rest’

My job as a project manager by day and freelance writer by night might be stressful but focusing on ‘me’ and ‘my job’ sometimes feels easier than dealing with the unorganised chaos around the house (which I must admit that I usually create!). After all, I’ve worked full-time for nearly 4 times as long as I’ve been a parent so maybe that’s why it’s sometimes easier. At work I can make a cup of tea when I want (most of the time), I get to have a lunch break (most of the time) and as long as I plan my day, I know what it’s going to bring (most of the time).

So, is work-life balance for working parents a myth? There is so much about it in the news and in magazines and it always catches my attention; however I struggle to work out if it is maybe just a feeling or something that can be measured? We all want to be happy, but in the current economic climate (where one or both parents have to work in order to pay the bills) we don’t always end up in a job we are particularly passionate about which doesn’t help.

In my opinion, as long as we are continuing to focus on what we enjoy doing and also trying to fit more of what we want into our lives, then everything else should fall into place. The main measure for me is that I feel happy with the way things are. I also need to remind myself to ask for help when I need it.

Family life will always be stressful and a little haphazard, but being a parent we bought into that from the start. I’m finding that things get easier as my children are getting older but I’m now hearing stories of teenage issues – I’m nowhere near that stage with my children yet. Help!

Until next time…

Help decluttering your handbag

Why does the handbag remain cluttered? If yours is anything like mine, it’s a black hole containing many old tissues; receipts; loose change; crumbs (why is that?); make up; sweets without their wrappers; scraps of paper with half written lists, etc. It annoys me that I never seem to have the time to tip out the contents and sort everything out – it always feels like a big job.

The other day, my 6 (almost 7) year old daughter (who must have seen my bag as a fun challenge) asked if she could sort it out. I hesitated for a moment feeling protective about my ‘bits and bobs’, but then thought – why not.

The result was, a tidy and organised bag with everything put back in its place – less the clutter. I was happy, she was happy and I’m now wondering what else I can delegate…..

Is your handbag (or something similar) in need of a good clear out?

A simple list of chores…

A very simple written out list on a large whiteboard (placed somewhere prominent) could make you feel a little more organised.  Even if you don’t get to do everything, it’s a reminder of the minimum required each day to keep on top of your chores.  This visible list, in the full view of other household members, may even get you some help!

Good luck!

Until next time…

Interesting rubbish!

Sometimes rubbish on the floor can turn into something interesting to photograph. I glanced over at the other side of the room today and spotted a screwed up tissue in the shape of a dog. I asked one of my daughters to grab a black felt tip pen and photographed him at the various stages of his evolvement. It kept the children entertained for a while as well.

Until next time…

Back to the routine on Monday

The weather was gorgeous today so I spent some of it relaxing in the garden.  I always feel pleased with myself when I actually relax because I’m usually rushing around multi-tasking.  Of course I’m not going to admit that the relaxing had anything whatsoever to do with my headache (as a result of the few drinks in London last night!).

Anyway, Monday will be my first day back at work after a couple of weeks off with the family.  Although we didn’t go away on holiday, it was lovely getting up every morning and deciding on the day whether to actually do something or not.

Every day I…..

  • was spontaneous (my life coach will be pleased with me as she has been trying to get me to be spontaneous!).
  • went outside for exercise or just for fresh air – even if it was raining.
  • laughed.
  • made some sort of improvement to the state of the house (in a decluttering sort of way).
  • added a new blog to my writing notebook (http://mywritingnotebook.wordpress.com).
  • made sure I had fun with the family.
  • had some ‘me time’.
  • put my feet up.
  • had chocolate!

It’s lovely pottering around at home, but as usual things have to come to an end.  Looking forward to the next break (probably October half-term).

Until next time…

Facing my fear of cycling!

My partner kindly bought me a brand new bike the Christmas before last and until yesterday it has spent 20 months in the garage! My fear of riding a bike stems back from childhood (whilst visiting relatives in Canada) when I fell over the handlebars and into a bush and a wheel spoke went into my knee. I had no idea that I was supposed to pedal backwards on that particular bike in order to stop!
“Don’t worry mummy, I can teach you to ride a bike”, said my 6 year old daughter, so yesterday morning she woke me up at 6am and we pushed our bikes to the nearby green. It didn’t take me long to feel confident again and this morning we rode further and I was actually disappointed when we arrived home. We vowed to take an early morning ride every day for the rest of the holidays. Children can be so encouraging – and she even offered to take the photo to prove that I did it (see below).
Who said you can’t have fun when you are not actually going on holiday?

The final page of my book…

Today I finished writing my book A Gift for Stressed and Busy Parents and it’s now with the publisher for review and comments.  It’s been quite a journey getting all my thoughts down over the last couple of years and structuring the book in such a way that it will help others.  I’ve almost achieved my goal.  If you want to read the introduction, this can be found on my website www.tipsandluxuries.com.

I’ve also just posted ‘note 99’ on my other blog  http://mywritingnotebook.wordpress.com, where I set myself a challenge on 1st May 2011 to learn a new writing/grammar/punctuation tip every day for a year (in an attempt to be a better writer) and blog about it to teach others.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my weekend.  Hope yours was great too.

Until next time…

Time with the children individually

Today it was my youngest daughter’s birthday and we bought her a Maxi Micro scooter.  I decided to take her out on it by herself and spend some time with her; she loved having my undivided attention.  I then took my eldest daughter out to help her learn how to ride a bike without stabilisers.

Although we all love doing things together, taking my girls out individually isn’t something I normally do.  Today it was lovely and I know they enjoyed it – I really had the time to watch, encourange, motivate and teach them.  We’ve agreed to make it a regular thing, even if it’s just half and hour each weekend.

Hope you’ve had a good day.

Until next time…

Sandra
