Day 70: Organising Wardrobes Part 1: Making the Most of the Wardrobes You’ve Got

Under shelf storage baskets

We have two double built in wardrobes in our bedroom but I’ve never liked them mainly because they don’t have backs to them (it’s just bare wall). They are also at right angles to each other meaning that one of them goes round the corner behind the other, which makes that part unusable and very difficult to keep clean.

Both wardrobes are jam packed with clothes, bags, unused gifts, diaries, shoes, boxes of stuff, old suitcases filled with clothes (that I’ll probably just give away one day when I get to them), jigsaws… and so on. The every day visits to these wardrobes are mainly to get my scarves and to put away my husband’s shirts and tshirts. The rest is untouched unless I’m looking for something.

It’s going to take a lot of time and effort to go through these wardrobes and I don’t feel ready for that just yet (and certainly not ready to take pictures). It’s going to reveal a lot of stuff which could end up all over the room if I don’t allow a large chunk of time to sort through it. I do want to make the most of the space eventually but will be parking that thought for now.

Focusing on the other side of the room

On the other side of the bedroom are two other old unmatched wardrobes that used to be in the girls’ rooms before they got their fitted wardrobes (with backs!). They were dumped in our room because that’s what we do – move things somewhere else. About two houses ago, they were in our bedroom and I think one of them has even spent some time in storage.

So, you’ve probably getting the gist that they are old and we’re probably lucky they are still in one piece. The doors, shelves and rails have seen better days. However, we (I) managed to fill them with clothes, shoe and clutter over the years which is why nothing ever gets thrown away because we have space to store things. Having backs on these ones at least makes them less dusty to store things in, so I tend to use these for every day clothes and work stuff but they are now jam packed.

Last week, I decided to tackle one of them and took all of this stuff out. Can you see the bowed wooden rail?

Wardrobe before reorganising

I keep my work suits, skirts etc. in here, so tend to go in there once a weekday to prize something out and then squeeze it back in again when putting things away. It’s a struggle and not pleasant. Also in here are ‘going out’ dresses, my husband’s suits, an old iron and many bags of items that I’ve shoved in the bottom of the wardrobe when I don’t know where else to put them.

Shifting to the positive

As part of my decluttering challenge, I’m attempting to make the most of the wardrobes and space we’ve got in our bedroom, so I decided to reorganise this one wardrobe to see if there’s anything I can throw or give away.

Once I’d removed everything, I repositioned the shelf from the bottom to the top and moved the clothes rail down. I was restricted to where I could actually place the shelf and rail because of the worn holes in the side panels of the wardrobe, but I worked something out.

I then had an idea and looked on Amazon for some under shelf baskets to hang from the top shelf so that I could store things in a more visual way. The shelves turned up from Amazon today so I put some folded up shirts on one shelf and rolled up tights on the other. There’s not much I can do about the bowed clothes rail but it’s holding ok.

Wardrobe after reorganising

I decided to repurpose this wardrobe and it’s now mainly ‘work stuff’. I might change things around once I start on the other wardrobes, but for now, the clothes can be moved freely, I can get things in and out with ease, and I have a place for tights and shirts.

I actually placed a few items in the charity bag too which was another very positive step.

This evening, I made a start on the second wardrobe but it got a bit too exhausting. Sorting out clothes uses up a lot of energy.

Until tomorrow…

Day 69: Clearing a Path to the Desk

There’s no point having a desk if you can’t get to it and there’s no point getting to it and then it’s too messy to sit at.

Faced with this obstacle course in the spare room…

Cluttered path to writing desk

…I decided to set the timer for 30 minutes and clear the pathway to the desk. I moved stuff over to the other side of the room, cleared the desk, wiped it down and then vacuumed the path from the room entrance to the desk.

Clear path to writing desk

As this room is the ‘last stop shop’ for things we don’t want or that need sorting though (clutter!), it won’t be perfect for a while. I’ve accepted that and am not looking for perfect in this room for now. I’m making good progress in other rooms and that’s fine with me.

I can still use the room and get to the desk which is the important thing. All I need to do is keep this pathway and desk clear every day which, if you’ve been following me for a while, you will have seen me do before. This means that this pathway and desk is just another ‘clutter habit area’ that I’ll be monitoring daily like the other areas around the house.

There’s a whole ‘other mess’ going on over the left hand side of the room. That’s a blog for another day!

Until tomorrow…

Day 68: I Sold Some Clutter!

Harry Potter board game

I was sorting out a pile of games the other day that my girls no longer wanted. In amongst them I found a ‘good as new’ Harry Potter game and thought I’d advertise it on FaceBay. All the pieces were in there, which is quite rare in this house. I thought I’d start with £8 for the game and see how it went.

The results…

Not being a Harry Potter fan myself, I was shocked to get almost 300 views within 12 hours and about 10 requests asking if it was still available. Two buyers were even willing to pay postage for me to send it to them. I sold it to one of the first buyers that said they could pick up.

A lady collected it today. That £8 is only a small offset to the cost of the clutter mentioned in yesterday’s post, but it’s a start.

I’m now working through other unwanted games but finding pieces missing – they could be anywhere. I do remember having a ‘missing pieces box’ once – it’s probably buried beneath the clutter in the spare room.

More on games and what I’m going to do about them another day!

Until tomorrow…

Day 67: The Cost of Clutter and Procrastination

There’s a cost to not getting things done. Last weekend you will have read my blog on procrastinating about the drain issue and we ended up handing over £120 to a drain specialist!

What’s the cost this weekend?

There’s been a particular task on my to do list since around the beginning of this year, which is to put a screen protector on my daugher’s iphone. I kept forwarding the task to the next day because I didn’t know where the pack of iPhone covers were that I bought. I kept thinking that I would come across them whilst I was decluttering. As weeks have gone by I still didn’t do it because it involved looking for it in all the cluttered areas that I hadn’t sorted out yet. There were several places it could be but I never made the time to focus on it.

I could have checked a couple of drawers. I could even have ordered new ones – they are only about £4 for 2. Again, I did nothing about it.

Yesterday when we were coming out of the restaurant where we’d had a nice family dinner, I turned around after hearing something fall to the floor. There on the ground was my daughter’s iphone (face up). She looked a bit worried and I was holding my breath as she looked at her phone. There was a large diagonally crack down the phone.

All I could think about was that I hadn’t put the iPhone cover on the phone. I could have easily looked for it or ordered another pack but I didn’t.

She was angry and upset partly blaming me for not putting the cover on and partly blaming herself for dropping it.

I got in the car and accepted that it’s just one of those things. It made me think that maybe this is just the cost of the clutter. She can still use the phone but it’s going to cost about £120 to get it fixed.

So, that’s two weekends that we’ve had to fork out £120 due to procrastination.

I think I am starting to learn my lesson that I must stop procrastinating and get these things out of the way. Even though I think I’ve prioritised correctly and I’m on top of my lists, I think I’m missing something. I suppose I could call my trusted online list app a bit cluttered.

Maybe I should have spent 5 minutes looking for the screen protector and place an order if I didn’t find it.

So, today I’m quickly going to go through my lists and consider prioritising all the 5-10 minutes jobs and get around to tackling them in a more timely manner this weekend.

Until tomorrow…

Day 66: Purchases Waiting to be Returned Are Temporary Clutter

Slippers to be returned

I bought myself some new comfy slippers a couple of weeks ago. I ordered two colours to see which I preferred.

I kept these beige ones…

Comfy slippers

…and left the unwanted ones sitting around waiting to be returned. Another habit I need to kick (I nearly always wait until the last possible date to return things).

Taking action

At lunchtime today, I boxed up the unwanted ones and took them to the local drop off point. It felt good getting the returns receipt knowing that it was something else out of the house and money almost back on the credit card.

… and yes, I got rid of the old tatty slippers that are no good for anyone. I basically wore them until the soles came off 😊.

One item in and one item out.

Until tomorrow…

Day 65: No Need for Expensive Boxes to Store Christmas Decs

Xmas decs in a cardboard box

You might wonder why I’m writing about Christmas decorations. Today I took some time off and focused on decluttering amongst other things. I walked around the house again to get a feel for where the energy wasn’t flowing.

I’m embarrassed to say that the area that I’ve been putting off is the conservatory as the Christmas decorations were dumped out there two months ago, and are still all over the place. The curtains usually hide this, but with the evenings starting to get lighter this time of year it was definitely time to box them up.

The last couple of months I’ve been considering buying some plastic boxes that are easily stackable in the loft, but decided against it as it would have been an unnecessary expense. So, instead I used the cardboard boxes that they came out of.

Motivating myself to make a start

I couldn’t even step into the conservatory as it was sooo packed and not just with Xmas decs either (yet another clutter habit area!) In the middle of the room was an exercise machine that we moved out there when we needed to put up the Christmas tree in December. So, I got on it and did a ten minute workout to motivate me to tackle the boxing up. It did the trick, as I don’t need much motivation when it comes to decluttering.

Boxing up the Xmas decs

It took me a while to sort everything out, box it all up and tape the boxes shut. Then I left them on the upstairs landing until my daughter got home to help me. I was determined to get them up in the loft this evening so that I didn’t mess up yesterday’s success of keeping that area clear.

Xmas dec boxes ready to go into the loft

I opened the loft and my daughter passed them up to me.

All in all, a long-overdue job well done, although I still have to finish tidying the conservatory. That’s a blog for another day.

I didn’t stop there though. I started on one of the bedroom wardrobes too (more on that tomorrow, as the under-shelf baskets that I ordered from Amazon won’t be here until then).

Until tomorrow…

Day 64: Clearing the Pathways in Your Home

I walked around the house today to see where the clutter was congregating in pathways and planned on picking one area that was causing the most issues. Pathway clutter is easily identified when you have to:

  • Walk sideways to get through it
  • Physically move the stuff out of the way
  • Jump over it

One such area I chose to work on today was the upstairs hallway. I picked each individual item up and dealt with it straight away.

Hallway before decluttering

The upstairs landing is what I call a ‘clutter habit area’ that needs daily monitoring (I’m starting to think that I could write a whole book on this topic). It’s easy to dump things on the landing as it’s just outside the messy spare room and serves as a half-way house to where’s items are heading. A bit like the back door area that’s also under my daily monitoring watch.

It took around an hour to sort everything out, and some of it did go back in the spare room for reasons I won’t go into right now (that’s a blog for another day). I then gave the hallway and upstairs bedrooms a much needed hoover. It now looks like this…

Clear hallway

Clutter Habit Areas

Items tend to congregate in my house for the following reasons:

  • I haven’t made a decision about whether I’m keeping them or not
  • I haven’t physically moved them out of the house
  • I just don’t know where to put them

I think I will get better at this over time, particularly as I’ve been reading and listening to a lot of clutter books this week. These are ones that I’ve read and listened to before but I’m thankfully picking up different messages this time around.

How does the house feel now?

Calmer. The hallway landing is visible from the front door (if you look up). It felt much more open, airy and clean when I walked in from work this afternoon. My eldest daughter seemed happy too and commented on how different it looked upstairs. The decluttered area is quite near her bedroom and she shared her appreciation about what I’d done this morning.

We also need to get out of the habit of hanging wet towels on the bannisters as it’s causing the paint to peel, so I’ll have to rethink that one.

Until tomorrow…

Day 63: Two Items In… So, Two Items Out

My friend (and trained massage therapist) came round to give me a massage this morning, so I’m feeling fabulously relaxed now even though I had to go to work after that. I’ve been drinking lots of water and herbal teas ever since in order to replenish the fluids released from knots and tension in my muscles (she had to work a lot on my back, neck and shoulders due to all the stress I hold there).

We had a lot to talk about and got on to the subject of decluttering. She was saying how she’s recently slowed down her buying habits and created a rule for herself. She’s only allowed to bring items of clothing into the house if she donates the same number of items to charity.

It sounds easy and I’m sure we’ve all told to ourselves that we are going to do this. Without thinking, I said that I hadn’t bought anything for ages, but then I remembered that I had bought these two deliciously soft cardigans recently…

Two items purchased

So, Two Items Out…

I went to my wardrobe this evening and pulled these two items of clothing out and placed them in the charity bag. Every little bit helps reduce the amount of clutter I’m storing behind those closed doors.

Two items donated

Before I did that though, I tried each item on (something one of my dedicated readers advised me to do, thank you). Taking her advice made me realise that the arms were too short (the item on the left), which reminded me why I never wore it. It’s wool, cashmere and acrylic and I think I accidentally shrunk it in the wash many years ago.

Ha ha… that’s a way to get rid of items of clothing that I’m not sure about.

Until tomorrow…

Day 62: Decluttering Mindfully

As I’m such a busy bee, I tend to leave things by the back door to deal with when I get time. Some days I get time and some days I don’t.

An identified clutter habit area

Other family members may have added to this pile, although looking at the items they do all look like things that I have randomly placed there.

When I got in from work this evening, I spent twenty minutes or so doing the usual Monday night bins routine followed by dealing with all items by the back door until it was completely clear.

Clear space

So, I think I’ve identified another clutter habit area. This will now be another ‘daily checkpoint’ like the ottoman in my bedroom that I wrote about yesterday.

Being mindful of clutter

If I can mindfully keep these two areas clear, I will feel like I’m moving forward. I shall also be looking for other habits that can easily be resolved by focusing on them daily.

So much to do… but it’s all good stuff!

Until tomorrow…

Day 61: I Have Far Too Many Clothes

I’ve mentioned this a few times over the last couple of months, but if my cupboards and drawers weren’t so jam-packed I might hang some of these worn-for-a-couple-of-hours clothes up. I just dump them (sometimes folded nicely and sometimes not so nicely) and it’s a bad habit. Not sure why I get so many items out, but I suppose it depends what I am doing, where I am going and how cold I am.

Untidy pile of clothes

This was clear last week, so I need to break this habit. There’s actually an ottoman seat under there somewhere and I don’t get to sit on it, as I use it as a landing pad for my clothes. I do hang up a lot of stuff, but the more I do that, the less room I have in the wardrobes. It’s definitely time to give some away.

It didn’t take long and it’s all clear now…

Ottoman

In order to achieve the above, I had to shove things in whatever spaces I found in my wardrobes and drawers (no pictures of that for now!)

Some serious clothes decluttering and organisation needs to happen – just not today. I’m too tired. Instead of spending a whole day doing it through, I think I need to break it into bite-sized chunks.

I’ll come up with something during the week. Maybe I’ll start with what is actually in the ottoman!

Until tomorrow…
