Day 109: A Brisk Walk Followed by Old Family Videos and Some Tidying Up

I had a brief walk/jog outside this morning, which is the first time since the lockdown. This morning I just felt like it. I kind of felt a bit uneasy about going out though but didn’t leave myself much time to think about it, I just got dressed and went about 8.45am. The rest of the family weren’t even up at this point being a Saturday.

As I walked down the road, that I’ve walked down hundreds of times before, I felt like I shouldn’t be there. It felt strange. In the fifteen minutes that I was out, I saw six people in total (four adults and two children) and two dogs. The first man went by on a bike and said good morning (from a safe distance) and then I saw another man with his son, so I crossed the road and he thanked me. The others that I saw were in the distance, so I avoided where they were walking. All in all, it was okay, so I think I’ll go out again, but maybe earlier in the morning.

After a bit of breakfast, we had family time in the lounge and watched old videos (you know, the little tapes that go into the old video cameras) as well as some DVDs that my mum created for us from some of her footage many years ago when the girls were small. We had such a laugh watching them and it felt cosy spending time together in the lounge.

Early afternoon, they all went to do something else and I took the opportunity to read the book I’ve been wanting to read. I don’t get to sit in the lounge much on my own and it was lovely and quiet. I was getting a bit distracted about how untidy it was though. Nothing major, just surface and floor clutter, so that became my topic for today’s blog.

Decluttering the surfaces and floor in the lounge

Before tidying the lounge

I knew that I didn’t have long before everyone would come back in so I started with taking all the unnecessary items out, then did some dusting and polishing. I finished off with vacuuming the floor, sofas and cushions. My husband came back in towards the end and fixed one of the attachments to the vacuum cleaner that hasn’t been working for a whole (that was a bonus as it meant that I could clean the sofa cushions properly).

After tidying the lounge

The room’s not perfect as I had to leave out the DVD’s, box of tapes, and also the video camera that we were using to watch the tapes.

Later on my husband cooked some lovely fillet steaks for dinner and I had them with vegetables and a waffle.

All in all a pretty chilled out and also productive day.

Until tomorrow…

Day 108: The Older you Are the More you Have, and the Harder it is to Get Rid of Things

This statement has some truth to it, and sometimes I use it as an excuse for having so much. I had a busy working day today and then this evening I was faced with this stuff that I’d placed by the door to put in the garage.

If they are things that I’m not sure that we want, should they go into the garage? I decided to make some decisions on the spot instead of avoiding making them like I usually do.

The inflatable outdoor game set is something the girls bought a couple of years ago with their pocket money and it’s been hanging around in the garage and various rooms since. They don’t want it so it’s got to be a candidate for the charity bag (once deflated).

The exercise ball is a useful item to have in the house but not if no one uses it. I think I originally bought it for pregnancy yoga or something about 16 years ago. I just googled what you can do with it and it has multiple uses so I think we’ll keep that in the house. It’s good for exercise, posture and some people use it as a desk chair. I just need to find a home for it so that it doesn’t get in the way. I’ll set myself a target that if I don’t use it by the end of April, I’ll put it in a charity bag.

The ice cream maker (in the carrier bag) is missing its lid. I have no idea if the missing part is in the house or garage. I don’t remember ever using it – my husband may have made ice-cream with it a couple of times when the girls were small. I’m going to put it in a box in the garage with a label saying ‘if spare parts are not found by Dec 2020, please throw me away!

I need to live with less

…but with my car boot already full of items that I need to donate, where do I put things now? It has to be the garage. Also, when charity shops actually open again, are they going to want the hundreds of bags that people will possibly drop off at the same time?

I read a really good article the other day that my friend sent me about minimalism, which is about committing to owning less rather than constantly decluttering, which I initially thought was the same until I read more of the article. It got me thinking that I need to part with more, and stop moving things from room to room for later sorting. I also need to get out of the habit of keeping things just in case.

Is ‘keeping things just in case’ so wrong though? At the moment it’s proving to be quite useful when we can’t get out to buy what we need, e.g. the table I’m using in the garage, the plant pots for my seedlings etc.

Lots of thoughts going around in my head at the moment. Is anyone else wondering what’s going to happen when we all emerge from our houses, heading for the charity shops armed with lots of bags of unwanted stuff? Maybe it’s just me thinking that it’ll be an issue, or maybe I’m just trying to think of excuses to not get rid of things.

Until tomorrow…

Day 107: Wunderlist is Shutting Down, so I’ve Moved my Lists and Tasks to Microsoft To Do

Transferring lists and tasks to Microsoft To Do

I was horrified for a brief moment last night when I saw an email in my inbox saying that the Wunderlist app, that I use for all of my lists and tasks, is shutting down on 6 May. It’s an app that I’ve used daily since about 2012 to monitor my tasks and reference lists so you can imagine how I was feeling.

Luckily there were instructions within the email showing me how to import them all into the suggested Microsoft To Do app which I have completed today 😅. Thankfully it was a quick process and didn’t take long at all.

968 tasks were transferred over! Don’t worry, they are not all things I need to do as such; I have some reference lists in there as well. I’ve spent a bit of time this evening tidying and decluttering my lists, as well as learning how this new app works. It’s mainly the same with only a few minor differences which is good.

It also made me realise how many tasks I take on – some are low importance but still need to be done at some point. Busy busy…

Until tomorrow

Day 106: Decluttering the Ingredients in my Fridge for Today’s Dinner

What I conjured up today for dinner

Today I kept hearing the words ‘I’m hungry’ from the girls. I was working, and although we had a small jacket potato with a little bit of left over chilli at lunchtime, it still didn’t stop them being ravenous by tea time.

I made the mistake us mums make and asked them what they wanted for dinner. They said that they didn’t want anything in the fridge, freezer or cupboards but luckily they left me alone downstairs long enough to come up with a few dishes from what was in the fridge, which gave me an idea for today’s post.

I didn’t declutter the fridge as such, but instead decluttered the ingredients that were scattered about the fridge with a view to making a selection of dishes for everyone. This would allow me to get rid of some leftovers and other foods about to go out of date. There was a part of me that really couldn’t be bothered to cook, but something came over me when I thought about how we could end up throwing a lot of it away. Whilst listening to an audio book, I found the energy and enthusiasm to do the following:

  • I chopped up a whole iceberg lettuce (we threw the last one away so I was determined to use this one)
  • I got out the leftover roast lamb (almost gone)
  • I made my special mini roast potatoes which only take an hour from start to finish (we have a lot of potatoes for some reason)
  • I chopped up an ‘almost whole’ cucumber that I knew wouldn’t get eaten otherwise
  • I got out some cherry tomatoes as we had two packs
  • I made a bowl of fusilli pasta (yes, managed to get some in the supermarket last week)
  • I stir fried some chicken breast and then added left over tin tomatoes, tomato purée, ginger, lemon, garlic, mixed herbs, black pepper, chicken stock, spring onion and cashew nuts (my own made up recipe which turned out better than I thought).
  • I cooked some asparagus
  • I cooked some spinach that we had left in a bag

I don’t get excited about cooking but I did feel pleased with myself this evening.

When it was ready, I called the girls down and they didn’t complain, they just ate it. What they put on their plates was completely different to each other, but they seemed happy. I even have some left over chicken for tomorrow!

There’s a bit more room in the fridge now, making it easier to see what’s going out of date.

I hope you’ve all had a good day at home.

Until tomorrow…

Day 105: An Out of Control Utility Room. How Can the Smallest Room be the Messiest One?

Corner of utility room before and after

It’s become a bit of a dumping ground really and I’d finally had enough this morning. I was up early because I heard the rubbish truck outside and panicked as I’d only put the food waste bin out last night (I could have put the rest out but didn’t think it was appropriate to drag the large bin round the corner with my pajamas on; I thought it was best to wait until this morning 😊). I was lucky, the 7am truck that woke me up was only collecting food waste which gave me a bit more time 😅 .

I got dressed quickly and quietly dragged the large flattened cardboard boxes (from my birthday plants last week) out through the side gate, as well as the box and large recycling bin half full of plastics, tins and glass.

Back to the messy utility room… I can’t really blame anyone else for the clutter in there; I put things there in a rush or just because I can. It’s become a mix of:

  • Washing (obviously)
  • Things we need to get rid of (that haven’t made it to their final destination – a classic clutter habit area)
  • Paperwork and pending trays (I thought I had a good idea once, to use this space for pending and to do trays etc., but it didn’t really catch on – I need to rethink that)
  • Spare bottles of water (that should be in the kitchen cupboard or fridge)
  • Other items that shouldn’t be there.

The mess was making my life unnecessarily difficult as I couldn’t get to the washing machine and dryer. I kept having to move things in front of the freezer when I wanted to do the washing then back in front of the washing machine when I wanted to get into the freezer. It took me a while to find places for things this morning (or just throw them out) but I certainly feel better now it’s all clear. I can work on the rest of the utility room when I feel motivated again.

I had half day today so this all kept me busy until just after lunch when I had to start work. This morning I also fitted in making chilli in the slow cooker, doing the washing, changing the beds, cleaning the kitchen (again) and assisting my daughter with pancakes.

It was actually quite nice to sit down and do some focused work this afternoon.

The chilli con carne was tasty. I’ve never cooked it in the slow cooker before and it was lovely that I only had to quickly cook some rice to go with it when I finished work this evening.

All and all, a productive 105th day of my decluttering challenge.

Until tomorrow…

Day 104: Making Use of Plant Pots and a Solar Lantern From the Garage

My seeds have been doing well in the conservatory from when I planted them just over two weeks ago. Here is one successful tray of seedlings 🌱 …

As mentioned yesterday, I searched the depths of the garage for some pots, and found nine in all shapes and sizes. I also stumbled upon a solar lantern. If it wasn’t for the Covid-19 pandemic and the shops being closed, I probably would have gone out and bought pots, so I feel good that I’m recycling these ones. The lantern was a good find as well.

Here are a few of the geraniums and whirlybird mix seedlings 🌱 that felt that needed repotting…

I’ve left them in the conservatory for now until they are a little bit more established (I’m new at this so think I’m doing it right). Just need to remember to water them.

The solar lantern

I opened the lantern box and discovered that it was brand new. It had a receipt in it from March 2011! I wasn’t sure if it belonged to me or my mum and dad (as I once looked after some of their belongings in the garage). I rang my mum but she wasn’t sure whose it was and said that I might as well use it. Having little solar panels in the top of the lantern and rechargeable batteries, it charged nicely during the sunny spells today. I was really pleased when it lit up in the garden this evening…

Solar lantern by day and by night

It’s been a productive couple of days.

Until tomorrow…

Day 103: Easter Fun, Continued Decluttering, a Movie and a Tasty Dinner

Even though my children are teenagers, they still love the Easter egg fun. I don’t think that there should be an age limit do you? The cream eggs were eaten before breakfast and I think they started on the large ones late morning 😀. The girls mostly stayed in their rooms after that, only really coming out for non-chocolatey food.

I really enjoyed the pace of today; the sun shone again and I did some enjoyable pottering about and tidying up (mostly sorting out the stuff that I took out of the conservatory yesterday). I found another packet of seeds that I hadn’t planted and sowed them in a plastic tray.

I checked on my other seedlings 🌱 and noted that they are getting a bit crowded (maybe a job for next week). I found some random pots and something else interesting in the depths of the garage – more on that tomorrow.

Today I even got the time to update my other blog, sit in the garden for ages on my own, and watch the movie ‘Yesterday’ with my husband. Love that movie.

My husband slow cooked roast lamb for dinner this evening and I made the potatoes, veg and gravy. We washed it down with a glass of red wine 🍷. Delicious!

Until tomorrow…

Day 102: Decluttering the Final Corner of the Conservatory and Re-sorting Rubbish Bags (Who Else Does That?)

I got up earlier than usual this morning and before anyone had even got up, I had moved everything from the final corner of the conservatory so that I could clean it. I then started rearranged the furniture again.

There were two rubbish bags by the door that I know I didn’t bag up. Have you ever gone through rubbish bags that the children have filled from their rooms? At a glance I knew that they contained items other than rubbish, for example, recycling, items that could go to charity, blank paper, hair brushes, etc.

I even found an old £10 note in an envelope addressed to my daughter that said ‘only to open in an emergency’. I said out loud ‘finders keepers’. She jokingly took the envelope from me saying that it was hers until she realised that, being an old note, it would need a visit to the bank to pay it in.

I have been busy all day pottering around the house and garden and relaxing in the sun as well. Here’s where I got to:

Until tomorrow…

Day 101: Decluttering the Emotions

How is it possible to feel down whilst having a relaxing day in the garden? I have absolutely no idea. Anyway, I knew that exercise would help so I started with that. Here’s the full list of the pick-me-ups that I used today:

  • Got on the Max trainer exercise machine for 25 minutes.
  • Listened to a few days of Miranda Hart’s videos whilst on the Max trainer and a few things she said resonated with me: “paradoxically, not being in control is freeing and is the answer, and that in itself is freeing.” She then said that “if we are not in control of our lives, we should just take a day at a time and be loving”. Very powerful words.
  • Watched my friend Alcina dancing in her lounge in Portugal (she’d posted it on Facebook to cheer all of her Facebook friends up). It really made me smile.
  • Talked to my mum and dad on the phone – they’re always there for me and just chatting with them makes me feel better.
  • Hugged my husband who wasn’t feeling well and made him cups of tea. He brought me out a drink in the garden later.
  • Sat with my girls in the garden – they always make me smile and I’m so lucky to be in lockdown with them.
  • Meditated using my favourite app.
  • Listened to random music videos on Facebook. The ones in particular that made me smile and sing along to were: Gary Barlow’s daily duets – he calls them #thecroonersessions. I even found ‘I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas’ – an animated version by the lovely Michael Bublé.
  • Laid down on the swing seat and stared up at the trees whilst it gently rocked.

After all of that, I got up and felt more motivated to continue with my daily decluttering challenge. Today is day 101. I found a screen protector lying around still boxed up that I needed to put on my daughter’s iPad and thought that it was a good time to just get on and do it.

I can feel myself building up to some big moves forward on the decluttering front this weekend. Also, I think I can hear my daughter doing the dishwasher downstairs which is one less thing that I have to do this evening.

Now about to cuddle up and watch a few old episodes of ‘Friends’ with my daughter.

Until tomorrow…

Day 100: Broken Tooth, Broken Glasses and Lots of Clearing up to Do

I’m trying to find the positives in my situation today, which, in comparison to what’s going on in the world, I shouldn’t complain about. I’m feeling fed up (which hopefully my readers will know is not like me). Firstly, I trod on my most comfortable pair of varifocal glasses and the arm snapped off. Then later this evening, I bit on something hard and heard a crack in one of my side teeth (top left, pre molar I think). The inside of it felt loose. I was really worried and rang the emergency dental-line number. They told me that due to Covid-19 they are only taking phone consultations. She was very nice and advised me to buy a temporary filling to put over it and to ring back tomorrow if I still need to speak to someone. She wasn’t trained as a dentist – just taking the call.

So, I left my dinner (which I hadn’t eaten much of at that point) and went to the nearest pharmacy that she suggested which happened to also be a large supermarket with queues of shoppers with trolleys outside. The pharmacy part was going to shut in eight minutes so the helpful security guard let me straight in rather than queue. Can you believe that they’d run out of the suggested ‘Toofy Pegs’ temporary filling pack. I rang the second one on the list which was in the town and they had one packet left, so I drove straight there.

It was getting dark and although the motorways had a fair few cars on them, the streets in town were empty, until I got to the small chemist. There was a takeaway shop nearby, lots of cars and people queuing outside the chemist. Everyone was spaced out inside and outside. I met a lovely lady who’d just celebrated her 60th birthday in lockdown a couple of weeks ago.

I got home and tried my best to attach the putty/cement filling to the tooth but it’s very wobbly and sensitive and such an awkward place to hold the inside part of the tooth in place. I now have a little bit of white cement stuck on the inside of my tooth but I’m not holding much hope that it’ll stay there. It didn’t stick the first couple of times so I had to re-soften it in order to put it back. My eldest daughter (15) was lovely and tried her best to help me.

Before all of this happened, I had just spent 1-2 hours in the kitchen cleaning and tidying up after my family had cooked for me yesterday. More or less got it back to how it was a couple of days ago. Then I heated up some of yesterday’s leftovers and… well… you know the rest.

I’m just hoping that when I wake up tomorrow, it will all have been a dream.

Until then…

Sandra
